What Causes Left Arm Shoulder Pain?

Left arm shoulder pain is one type of pain that can surely affect work. It even impedes one from functioning normally. In fact, people affected with this problem usually find it hard to perform even the simplest activities of daily living like taking a bath, or driving. The causes of this pain may be very simple and obvious or deadly and discreet. Here’s some of the most common pain triggers.

Starting off with the most serious, one should always suspect an underlying heart problem when experiencing left arm shoulder pain. It is better to expect the worst, than ignore it and then regret in the end. Heart problems or heart conditions, such as angina, or the crushing feeling in the heart may be felt as a pain that is radiating to the left shoulder down to the left arm. A heart attack, even if it’s the most minor, can also be felt as a dull or shooting pain travelling from the left shoulder distally to the arm. So first thing to do, consider going to the doctor and get heart conditions ruled-out as the cause of the pain.

Now that the heart is not the problem, one can assess the usual activities one does at work or at home. An overused shoulder limited to the left body region specifically to the shoulder and arm can evolve into a very painful sensation. Assess if work and home activities include excessive stretching, flexing, extending or rotating. If they do, try minimizing these actions, or at least making both left and right shoulder do the work than isolating it only to the left area.

Bad position and improper body mechanics can also lead to left arm shoulder pain. Bad positioning includes the posture one holds while sleeping. It also involves the prolonged position one usually hold for a long time at work, such as leaning on the left side for hours, among others.

If the left arm shoulder pain is characterized as dull and heavy, it may be due to chronic stress. Although it seems harmless, stress can take its toll on the body by representing itself as a painful sensation anywhere in the body. In this case, it may be come in the form of pain in the left arm and shoulder.

Obvious fracture, strong force, or damaging injury can also make the left arm and shoulder painful. This is because when blood and other cellular components escape through the muscles, the area becomes swollen and sore. One can also try checking for nerve impingement in the left arm and shoulder. A trapped nerve can be due to a growth, a cyst, or a chronic inflammation, that is constantly pressing the nerve, making it very painful.

The list of the causes of left arm shoulder pain doesn’t end here. There are other reasons why left arm and shoulder aches. The important thing is to make sure that the pain is not due to a life-threatening heart condition. At least it is a relief, although not from pain.

Constant Back Pain Under Left Rib Cage

Back pain under the left rib cage is a dilemma for all patients suffering from it. Any constant pain is viewed by doctors as a very serious disorder or disease and requires immediate attention and cure. The rib cage is a formation that is composed by the thoracic vertebrae and ribs, sternum-breastbone, and the coastal cartilages that links the ribs to the sternum. The term cage is defined as a structure to house animals. The rib cage is a similar structure which houses and also protects the animal heart and lungs, also known as a thoracic cage in medical terms.

In the chest-thorax region, nerves spring out from the spine and divide into two parts. The first part goes to just under the skin and further sends fibers to the surface and also travels around half way around the chest. This is a probable reason for the feeling of pain in the back to the side of the chest. The second part travels to the bottom of the rib around the sternum bone, and also surfaces to the skin and then goes back towards the side on the same level as the first nerve. Rib cage pain can be any pain or discomfort in the area of the ribs.

A fractured or cracked rib can cause rib cage pain, costochondritis, inflammation of the cartilage near the breastbone, osteoporosis and pleurisy. If you do encounter such ribcage you must first get the area x-rayed so as to determine if your ribs are fractured. In the event of a fractured rib an immediate surgery should be scheduled. If you’ve been suffering this pain for a long period of time (3 months or more) it’s necessary to go for an MRI or CT scan and consult a professional to check for nerve damage, tumor or cancer.

Pain due to inflammation of cartilage between ribs and breastbone can radiate around the back and down the arms. Such type of pain could be enormous enough to give you a syndrome that you are having a heart attack or lung problems. Though this condition is benign but it is very painful and uncomfortable during the period it lasts.

There are instances when constant back pain under left rib cage makes you visit a specialist in gastroenterology since the problem starts with your stomach. Your stomach feels empty and you feel that a big growl wants to come out, nothing that you end to eat makes it better, you often get heart burn and a pain in the left side underneath rib cage. Routine blood pathology should be conducted to eliminate any infection of the intestine or pancreas. Digestive, gastro and bowel disorders must be ruled out by seeking medical advice. Such symptoms might make you start wondering that it is due to twisted bowel, you might have to go for a check up of colon.

Constant pain under the left rib cage is very uncomfortable for pregnant women especially those in advanced stages of pregnancy. They experience extreme pain near the area where the ribcage and breast meet. The pain causes extreme trauma and sometimes makes it difficult to sleep.

Exercising the Liver: An Excellent Guide to Health & Fitness

(PRWEB) May 6, 2005

It is a tough job for the liver to keep the cleaning function of the body always in smooth operation especially with the present-day unhealthy eating and drinking habits of people. And, like any other machines, it encounters malfunctioning that needs immediate troubleshooting. But unlike other machines that need only oiling to run again, the liver has to be looked upon very carefully or the entire system will suffer if it does not function very well.

In youth, you might not notice the effects of malfunctioning liver. But when you reach middle and advanced age, you will discover that a lot of sicknesses are being caused by a malfunctioning liver. The symptoms of a damaged liver are: dull aching pain in the right side of the stomach area – often under the shoulder blade, terrible pain at the nape, rough tongue, unpleasant taste in the mouth in the morning and the appearance of yellowish color in the whites of the eyes. Other than those, a person with a troubled liver would also frequently feel loss of appetite, dizziness and drowsiness after meals.

With these indications of ailments, the person is often irritated and weak which could affect his entire outlook in life. And this could lead to fast deterioration of the body. Growing old would then become a burden.

But you can do something to prevent that misfortune from happening to you. Aging doesn’t have to bring about all sorts of diseases. It is not a reason that because you are getting old, you are expected to feel all kinds of sickness. There are times when you regret why you never heeded the advice to you before and why you never paid enough attention to your health when you were younger. Instead of dwelling on those regrets, why don’t you try doing something to alleviate that condition? No matter at what age you will decide to do so, it is never too late. Sanford Bennett, a phenomenal celebrity for bodily rejuvenation thru natural methods, has proven so.

In his campaign for total health rejuvenation, Sanford Bennett devised a program of exercise for the liver to keep it in a fine condition. The liver, being a gland, would respond well when exercised. And an exercise involving tension of the abdominal muscles will benefit the liver along with some massaging techniques. But of course, before doing the exercise, one must be familiar with the position and the structure of his own liver.

First Exercise

There are three exercises Sanford Bennett described for the liver. Feel the location of your liver with the fingers of both hands as you lie on your back. Press the fingers upward past the ribs. The liver can be easily moved and tensed because the abdominal muscles are in relaxed state. Create pressing movements under and upwards. Do this twenty times and increasing daily until you reach 100 or until your condition permits.

This tensing exercise is comparable to the effect you get when you ride a horse. This is an exercise frequently prescribed by physicians when the liver is not in good condition.

Second Exercise

Lie on your right side and place your left hand over the area of your liver. Position yourself with the head slightly inclined forward and with the knees bent. This will relax the abdominal muscles and place the liver forward. With your knuckle of the thumb or the pad of a finger, press well under the ribs and massage the liver.

Third Exercise (Percussion)

Light thumping of the liver will also help in the healthy activity of the liver. Lie on your left side which inclines the liver forward and the muscles relaxed. With your right fist, strike lightly but rapidly on the area. Begin with twenty strikes and increase daily up to how many your condition permits.

When the liver is properly taken cared of, the whole body system is guaranteed to be in a good condition. And when you pay equal attention to all the parts of your body, there is no need to worry about your health failing. Take care of your body.

The writer, Ismael D. Tabije, is the editor of the book, “The Man Who Grew Younger: Secrets to Fitness and Beauty for the Middle Aged and Beyond”, which can be accessed at http://growyounger.e-mart4all.com. The book has complete descriptions and illustrations showing unique but proven effective exercises for restoring sagging muscles and elasticity of the skin of the face, chin, throat and neck; reducing an obese abdomen; curing varicose veins and rheumatism without medicine; minimizing falling hair; and toning up muscles of all parts of the body.

The Tummy Tuck: More Career Women Opting for it, says New York City Plastic Surgeon

New York, New York (PRWEB) September 12, 2007

Plastic surgeon Kenneth M. Rose, M.D. has noticed a new trend among career women in New York City. Many are taking several or more years away from their careers to have children. But before rejoining the workforce, they want their figures restored to their pre-childbirth state.

Tummy Tuck Patients

“Many more career women than ever before are coming in, asking for a tummy tuck procedure before heading back to work,” says Dr. Rose who is board certified in plastic surgery. “Multiple pregnancies can cause the lower stomach to ‘pooch out’.”

Dr. Rose is also highly trained in hand and microvascular surgery.

Tummy tuck patients should have completed their families because childbirth cancels the effects of the surgery.

For instance, Kate, a 42-year-old attorney in Manhattan, was ready to resume her career after having two children, now one and three years old. (She did not want to be fully identified for privacy.)

Dieting and Exercise

“After having my children, I had to buy clothes several sizes too big just to fit around my middle,” she says. “Dieting, sit-ups, yoga, Pilates and other exercises were no help in reducing my stomach.”

During pregnancy, two long strips of stomach muscles sitting side-by-side and running from the sternum to the pubic area, are forced apart. That allows the internal organs to fall forward, resulting in extreme looseness and a bulging abdominal. Moreover, skin and tissues stretch beyond their ability to spring back to normal and don’t always respond to exercise.

“After my tummy tuck, I walked into interviews with a nice flat stomach in stylish clothes and projected the confidence I felt,” says Kate. “I am thrilled to look the way I do and have children.”

Youthful Looking

A tummy tuck requires a hip-to-hip incision which is placed inside the bikini line so the scar is hidden by underwear and bathing suits. The surgeon pulls the skin and fat layer up to the lower edge of the patient’s ribs and trims excess tissues. Then, in most cases, the two long strips of stomach muscles — technically known as the abdominus rectus — are sewn back together, creating a flatter abdomen. Sagging tissues excess skin and some fat are trimmed away. Outcome? Not only is the abdomen firmer and flatter, the waist is smaller and more youthful looking.

“Afterwards, I ask my patients to wear an abdominal binder for several weeks to insure the best possible healing,” says Dr. Rose.

The binder is like an elastic corset and also prevents swelling. Small surgical drains are taken out in the doctor’s office after two days and the patient is usually up and around within one or two days while going back to work is possible after 10 days to two weeks. Heavy lifting is verboten for about four weeks. Dr. Rose performs the surgery in his office or in a hospital with the patient under a general anesthesia. Depending on the patient, the procedure requires anywhere from two to five hours to complete.

“My C-section childbirth was much worse than the tummy tuck,” Kate says. “I had very little pain and was fine within a week.”

Liposuction

Men also ask for and receive tummy tucks but for different reasons.

“In most cases, men who have lost weight are left with hanging, loose skin on their abdomens,” Dr. Rose says. “The tummy tuck is never a weight loss procedure because the majority of weight on both men and women is carried deeper inside the body around the internal organs.”

Dr. Rose asks heavier patients to lose weight before undergoing a tummy tuck. In a few carefully selected cases, liposuction accompanies the tummy tuck procedure.

Breast Lift and Breast Reductions

“About 20 to 30 percent of tummy tuck patients also opt for a breast lift,” says Dr. Rose.

Nursing is usually hard on the breasts because the glands swell and stretch the skin then lose internal volume. The result? Sagging breasts, a condition known to doctors as breast ptosis. (The breast lift, or mastopexy, is charged as a separate procedure although it may be performed at the time of the tummy tuck.)

Dr. Rose also frequently performs breast reductions and the most requested facial surgeries like nose sculpting, eyelid surgery and face lift.

He is also a consulting surgeon for the United States Marshall’s Service, the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Riker’s Island and an honorary member of the New York City Police Honor League.

Answer by Clare
i had this a few weeks ago. I was in work and doubled over in pain, and couldn’t move because it hurt so bad, it took my breath away. I phoned antenatal and they spoke to my boss, who said to take paracetemal, and if it hadn’t gone within 10 mins to go to the hospital. It didn’t go, and because no one could take me, and all my family and fiance were in work, she called an ambulance. When i got to the hospital, they took my blood pressure, put me on a monitor thing which measures the babys heartbeat and shows the movements, n then done a swab. The pain finally went into a dull ache, then only hurt when i touched my tummy, then completely went. The doctor sent me home saying it was either braxton hicks, or my tummy stretching. Im 31 weeks, think i was 29 weeks at the time. Scared the life outta me, but its all good. So don’t panic its probably nothing, but just wait for the hospital to phone back.
Goodluck xx

Pain in Left Shoulder Blade-What Can Cause This?

As people are subjected to various stressful activities everyday, it is not surprising how, at the end of the day, muscle pains and other stress related discomforts may be experienced.  These stressful activities however may also include pain, persistent or not, in the shoulder area of the body.  Specifically, one may suffer pain in the left shoulder blade area.  A number of causes may account for such conditions.  But before we proceed our exposition as to what may cause pain in the left shoulder blade, let us first identify which part of the body exactly do we refer to when we say “shoulder blade.”

The shoulder blade, which is also known as the scapula, is the part of the human body – specifically, a bony structure – which connects the upper arm to the chest wall.  It may also form part of the joint socket connecting the upper arm to the body.  This bony structure is surrounded by tendons, muscles and tissues which function as cushion for the shoulder blade.  This cushion allows the arms and the shoulders to move smoothly.

Pain in left shoulder blade may be caused by some inflammation of the tendons or sinews in the left part of the shoulder blade.  Strained and overworked muscles or torn tissues in the part of the left shoulder blade may also account for moderate to acute pain in left shoulder blade.  If the large muscle called the trapezius becomes spastic in the left shoulder blade area, then one will feel pain in the left part of his shoulder blade.  Spastic muscles may be due to trauma or overuse.

However, not all instances of pain in the left shoulder blade can be categorized as conditions resulting from strained muscles or tendons.  One may feel pain in left shoulder blade although there really is nothing wrong in that particular region of the body.  Rather, the pain felt may be pain transmitted from another part or organ of the body.  It is a signal that another organ is in pain and is in need of immediate attention.  This process of pain being transmitted from one organ to the left shoulder blade area is called referred pain.  Radiated pain to the left shoulder area may actually indicate medical problems in the other parts of the body.  Therefore, these radiated pains from the other organs of the body may properly be the cause of pain in left shoulder blade.

What all these imply is that the pain felt in specific areas of the shoulder blade may be indicative of which organ may have been affected and have been radiating the pain.  Left shoulder blade pain may be a signal of some abdominal or stomach-related problems.  This may include ulcers, pancreatic, and ectopic pregnancy among others.  Pain in left shoulder blade may also indicate problems in the chest region.  These problems would include pneumonia, heart attack and/or other heart-related ailments, aortic dissection, pleuritis etc.  Although pain in left shoulder blade may just be caused by some strained muscles and tendons, it may also indicate diseases or pain radiated form the other organs of the body.  To be safe, it is always prudent that when symptoms arise, one goes to consult with a physician to get proper diagnosis and medication.

Will Gout Keep David Wells From Playing For The Red Sox?

(PRWEB) August 10, 2005

“Got Gout?” is the slogan on the popular T-shirt that all the Red Sox pitching staff are wearing. Red Sox teammate David Wells has been a sufferer of gout throughout his carreer. The main symptoms of gout are severe pain and inflammation in the joints. Sometimes even the pressure of a bed sheet can cause a person excruciating pain. If gout is left untreated it can lead to more serious problems such as kidney disease and high blood pressure.

Gout is caused by the body producing more uric acid than the kidneys can process and eliminate, causing it to build up in the joint. The body naturally produces uric acid; it’s also found in certain meats and fish. Gout sufferers may have inundated their body with foods high in uric acid or foods that cause high uric acid production, or their kidneys may be struggling to eliminate toxins from the body, uric acid being among them.

David Wells of the Boston Red Sox is not alone in suffering from this affliction. According to the Mayo Clinic, more than 2 million Americans suffer from gout symptoms. The Mayo Clinic also states that Gout is one of the oldest known diseases. It has been recognized for more than 2000 years.

There are a few basic options for treating gout, ranging from high-cost corticosteroid prescription medications to changing your lifestyle habits and low cost phyto-pharmaceuticals (plant-based medicines) that have been used for decades and are prescribed on a daily basis in Europe and Canada.

To cope with the pain, most sufferers use ibuprofin or a prescription pain reliever. For some this can help manage the pain, but doesn’t end it completely because it doesn’t address the cause of gout, but merely a symptom. Also, using medications like this on a daily basis can lead to negative side effects including stomach pain, bleeding and ulcers, liver damage and rebound headaches (headaches caused by drug overuse). Physicians have found that corticosteroid perscriptions such as cortisone and prednisone can help lessen the inflammation around the joints. This can help relieve gout symptoms of inflammation for a while, but comes with a long list of side effects including bone thinning, high blood pressure, mood swings, weight gain, cataracts and high blood sugar. And like pain relievers, it is only a temporary solution since it only addresses a symptom of gout, not the cause.

Some people can manage some of the gout symptoms by carefully watching what foods they eat. For those who choose this option regular excercise is essential in maintaning the disease. But according to published research, gout doesn’t have to be a problem you resign yourself to live with by “maintaining” it. As trends in health begin to shift towards more natural alternatives, gout sufferers are beginning to realize they can get real relief from the piercing, jarring pain caused by gout, without prescriptions or their side effects.

Several of the ingredients in Uricryl? are prescribed daily to treat gout and its symptoms in countries like Germany, England, France and Canada.

The ingredients in Uricryl? can help relieve the pain and prevent the crystals caused by gout from forming. Better yet, if taken on a continuous basis, the ingredients in Uricryl? can help your body eliminate the excess uric acid produced by your own body, improve circulation, reduce inflammation and pain caused by the uric acid crystals in the joints, and reduce the overall uric acid in your body. A one month supply of Uricryl? is $ 67, nowhere near the cost of currently prescribed drugs and seems to be much more effective as it directly addresses the cause of gout, not just the symptoms.
